Nantes Métropole includes 24 municipalities, serving nearly 700,000 residents, and plays a key role in transportation management, land-use planning, economic development, and environmental policy.
To modernize its network, the metropolitan authority plans to invest in new tram vehicles to replace the current fleet, which entered service in 1985 and will be recycled by a specialized contractor.
To support this project, Sfil and La Banque Postale provided a green loan of €20 million over 25 years.
As the first city to reintroduce the so-called “modern” tram, Nantes Métropole has invested in acquiring 46 new vehicles. Longer and brighter, these new trams offer 40% more window area and increase capacity to 300 passengers (up from 250 today).
Their design places particular emphasis on accessibility for people with reduced mobility, with eight double doors and adapted interior layouts. More energy-efficient and producing fewer emissions, they help reduce the network’s carbon footprint.
By 2027, 61 modern tram vehicles will be gradually introduced into service.
To support this fleet renewal, a new technical and operations center will also be built. This project underscores Nantes Métropole’s momentum and commitment to sustainable, inclusive mobility.
