Context

The Haute-Garonne Departmental Energy Syndicate (SDEHG) is a public entity bringing together 585 municipalities in Haute-Garonne and serving more than 1 million residents. It plays a central role in delivering the department’s public energy service.

To reduce municipalities’ electricity bills, SDEHG plans to install photovoltaic solar canopies in municipal parking lots.

Solution

To support this project, Sfil and La Banque Postale provided a €1 million green loan over 20 years.

A total of 14 photovoltaic solar canopies (parking shelters fitted with solar panels) were installed in parking lots across municipalities in Haute-Garonne, including two dedicated to shared self-consumption.

Results

This project helps municipalities lower their electricity bills through shared self-consumption (based on distributing the generated electricity among one or more nearby consumers), generate revenue by selling surplus electricity back to the grid, and provide added protection for parked vehicles—the canopies’ primary function.

The program will contribute to the expansion of renewable energy across the area.
A second series of 15 canopies is planned for 2025 to build on this momentum.
