The Thuraya 4-NGS satellite, designed to incorporate a new-generation mobile telecommunications system, is being built by Airbus Defence and Space on behalf of Al Yah Satellite Communications Company. This project is financed by an export credit, thus supporting innovation and the development of space infrastructure.

Background

The project is being led by Airbus Defense and Space (ADS), a specialized division of the Airbus Group with more than 30 years of experience in satellite technologies and in-orbit operations. The beneficiary, Yahsat, a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala sovereign wealth fund, operates a strategic satellite network for the Middle East region and beyond. The new satellite meets the growing need for connectivity and the modernization of telecommunications infrastructure in the region.

Solution

To support this strategic initiative, Sfil participated in the financing via an export credit, enabling the realization of this complex satellite by Airbus. This type of financing offers terms tailored to major international projects and strengthens the competitiveness of French exporting companies.

Results

The Thuraya 4-NGS satellite modernizes telecommunications services in the Middle East, with increased capacity and advanced features. With a total investment of more than €500 million, this project illustrates Sfil’s key role in supporting strategic French exports. The satellite was launched from Cape Canaveral on January 3, 2025.
