Sustainable and secure access to electrical energy in Benin

2021

Benin is deploying, with among others things, the support of an export credit, essential infrastructure – transport networks, substations, distribution and connection kits – to improve access to electricity and increase the connection rate, i.e. the proportion of the population effectively connected to the electricity grid, to 75% by 2025 (compared to 45% in 2019).

Context

This project aims to improve access to electricity throughout Benin, guaranteeing a secure and sustainable supply for domestic, commercial and industrial uses. The initiative aims to provide coverage of 90% in urban areas and 50% in rural areas by 2025, while complying with the most stringent safety, environmental and social standards.

Solution

To support this commitment to electrification, Sfil participated in the financing of this project, which has been carried out by Vinci Energies to deploy this essential infrastructure. This large-scale infrastructure includes the construction of 1,500 km of power lines, including 500 km of high-voltage lines, as well as the development of distribution networks.

Results

In addition to promoting access to reliable electricity, this project will create 900 local jobs over three years, while ensuring the transfer of know-how between Vinci Energies and its Beninese teams. This project represents a major step forward for the economic and social development of Benin.
